Chez Hirondelles is in the Charentes
Department; Department number 16 (the number at the end of the local
number plates).
The Charentes has gently rolling hills, similar to those of the South Downs of England. The bedrock is predominately chalk with flints above which there is the red clay that gives the region's fertile soils their distinctive ruddy colour. There are two distinctive parts to the department: to the east, there is the Limousin and to the west, there are the rolling vineyards of the Cognac region.
